Marc Chagall (French/Russian, 1887-1985)
Russian-French, 1887–1985
Marc Chagall, born in 1887 in Liozna (now Belarus), was a pioneering Russian-French artist known for dreamlike, colorful works blending folklore, biblical themes and Eastern European village life. His journey began in his hometown and flourished in Paris, where he became a central figure of the avant-garde.
His creations spanned painting, stained glass, ceramics and stage design, including the ceiling of the Paris Opéra. Hand-signed and numbered lithographs such as Le coq rouge (1957) are the Chagall works most often offered at auction.
