Step into the vibrant world of Robert M. Swedroe — a Bronx-born visionary whose work bridges two dimensions: the soaring structures of South Florida’s skyline and the layered depths of collage art. With over 60 years of impact across both architecture and fine art, Swedroe has proven that structure and soul aren’t opposites — they’re partners.

Robert Swedroe and Joe
The First Life: Architect by Day, Artist by Night
Back in the 1960s, before Miami became Miami, Swedroe was already shaping its future. Trained at Carnegie Mellon and Yale under legendary architect Paul Rudolph, he had an eye for precision and a mind wired for creativity.
He began making collages as a personal passion — but soon, they were selling out. His 1967 debut solo show at Lowe-Levinson Gallery? Total knockout. Eight sold-out shows followed, with his work making waves everywhere from the Deauville and Fontainebleau to the Wiener Gallery in NYC (yes, the star-studded one).
The themes? Wild. Brilliant. Personal. From baseball cards to religion, adult fantasy to childhood nostalgia — nothing was off-limits. Even Houghton Mifflin picked up his work for children’s poetry books. Robert wasn’t just making art; he was archiving memory.
Then, in 1974, he hit pause — turning full focus to Swedroe Architecture, the firm that would redefine luxury high-rises and basically help draw the Aventura skyline.
The Second Life: Art, Reinvented
Fast-forward to 2006. A casual invitation to join a group show at the Bakehouse Art Complex reignited the spark — and just like that, Swedroe returned to his first love, with fresh eyes and fearless evolution.
Gone were the strict outlines. In came dimensional collages, bold color palettes, and found objects with their own stories — sequins, bottle caps, jewelry, CD cases, feathers, tech scraps. If it caught light or held memory, he found a way to use it.

The Method Behind the Brilliance
Swedroe’s art isn’t random — it’s constructed like a building. Everything is sorted, cataloged, grouped by color and texture. He uses what he calls a “transfer method” to lay out each work with both instinct and structure.
And while many artists replicate, Robert doesn’t. Every piece is made by hand, one-of-a-kind, and deeply tactile.

The Series: A World in Layers
Swipe through any Swedroe collection and you’re bound to feel something. Each series is its own visual language:
Cyber Series – Digital meets physical. Geometric rhythm, bold tiles, and even a 6’x10′ floor installation at the Sagamore Hotel.
Narrative Series – Layers that tell stories. Look twice and you’ll find hidden figures and secret scenes.
Tube Series – Hundreds of rolled tubes made from famous paintings. Swedroe calls it “an art collector’s puzzle.”
Container Series – Hubcaps, wine boxes, jewelry tins turned into sculptural statements.
Celestial Series – Galaxies in collage. Think glitter, marbles, and cosmic swirl.
Reflective Series – Light meets metal. Mirrors and glass that change with your angle.
Legacy in Motion
One of the most beautiful twists in the Swedroe story? His granddaughter Ariel. A fashion designer with an eye as bold as his, she launched Swedroe: Art to Wear by Ariel, turning his collages into wearable statements. Think ready-to-wear, swimwear, and full runway moments — all powered by print and legacy.

The Book, The Brand, The Future
Robert’s latest milestone is his book:
“The Art of Collage – A Two-Dimensional Architecture.”
It’s a look into his creative method, personal journey, and how architecture trained his eye to see beauty in the overlooked.
Now partnered with Swedroe Licensing and major galleries like Contessa, his work appears at major fairs like Art Miami, Scope, and Art Palm Beach — and is crossing into puzzles, home décor, and more.

Galactic Explosion
by Robert Swedroe
At 91, with the clarity of a young artist and the discipline of a master architect, Robert M. Swedroe continues to defy the rules. Stroke or no stroke, nothing slows the vision. His art doesn’t just hang — it moves, glows, questions, remembers.
Welcome to the world of Swedroe. You’ll never look at bottle caps — or the skyline — the same way again.
